Chapter 11
Sticky snow covered the ground, and being a mild wet snow it made the earth beneath soft and muddy. It didn't cling to the deerskin moccasins he had greased to keep water out. He brushed aside a low branch, his knife in his hand, but the rabbit was dead. He caught a smell, wet and musky. Before he could locate its source a trigger hammer clicked from bushes across the stream. He dropped the earth.
